About Me

Hi there! My name is Dr. Joe Deng. After reviewing this page, I hope you are able to determine if I am the right doctor for you or your family member's needs.

I am a Board-certified psychiatrist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I am also a member of the Maryland Psychiatric Society and American Psychiatric Association.

I was born into a family of healthcare professionals. I am a first-generation immigrant and a second-generation psychiatrist. Through my formative years, I consistently strove to be a great student and eventually realised my ambition of becoming a physician. I attribute my success  to supportive, loving parents, dedicated teachers, and two important values: academic excellence and discipline.

I completed four years of medical school education, three years of psychiatry residency, followed by two years of child and adolescent fellowship training. This was a decade in which I learned the fundamentals of medicine and honed the advanced, therapeutic nuances of adult and pediatric psychiatry. With these skills, I plan to dedicate my experience and knowledge to provide expert care for the people within my community and state.

I have included specific education and experiences below.

Dulaney High School: National Merit Scholar

National Institute of Health: Intern at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Molecular Neuropsychiatry Branch

University of Maryland School of Medicine: Intern at the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition

Undergraduate Education: Vanderbilt University. B.A. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Departmental Honours and College Scholar. Magna cum laude

Medical Education: University of Maryland School of Medicine. Doctorate of Medicine. Arnold Blaustein Scholar

Psychiatry Residency: University of Maryland Medical Centre/Sheppard Pratt Adult Psychiatry Residency

Psychiatry Fellowship: University of Maryland Medical Centre/Sheppard Pratt Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. Chief Fellow of Sheppard Pratt

What is one major advantage of considering my clinic? There is a major shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists that is worsening as demand for mental health treatment increases. I can only imagine the feeling of disappointment and frustration when your child needs care now yet the soonest intake is 10 months away. Because I am growing my practice, I am currently accepting new patients and able to schedule an initial evaluation without a long wait. If you would like to schedule an appointment with me, please send an email to my HIPAA compliant email address: joedengmd@cohesionpsychiatry.com

I will reach out to you to find a time that works for your schedule. I am able to accommodate after school and work hours.

It is important to find a psychiatrist who relates well with their patients and can build a strong therapeutic alliance, a vital predictor of good treatment outcomes. I do especially well with academically-driven young people who use social media, plays videogames, loves animals, martial arts, and/or tabletop gaming. I am also trained during the pandemic and up to date with some of the most salient topics of modern psychiatry.

I leave you with a few qualities I think are important to prioritize in a psychiatrist. I strive to achieve these qualities each and every one of my patents:

1. Practices up to date evidence-based medicine

2. Embraces psychotherapy and psychoeducation

3. Collaborates with other specialties

4. Knows how to establish a strong therapeutic alliance

5. Empowers the patient (and family) in their own treatment

6. Shows humility in the limits of their knowledge and addresses the limits with life-long learning

I hope you find the best care for you or your family. Take care and be well!
